玄奘这次西天取经，历时17年之久，行程5万余里，138个国家，带回了佛教经典无数。唐太宗贞观二年(628年)玄奘从长安起步，路经姑臧(今甘肃武威)，再过敦煌，一直向西域进发。中途遇到高昌国王，高昌国王敬仰玄奘的壮举，派出20名随从，保护玄奘西去。

经过数年的艰苦跋涉，玄奘行程13800余里，终于抵达天竺国那烂陀寺，拜在高僧戒贤法师门下。经过5年的学习，玄奘成为了通晓三藏的十德之一，被尊称为“三藏法师”。

贞观十九，44岁的玄奘回到了长安。唐太宗在洛阳亲自召见了他，许以高官厚禄，劝其还俗，但玄奘初心不改，立志以身事佛，弘扬佛法，上书太宗“守戒缁门，阐扬遗法，此其愿也”。
